What is a Hedgehog?
Hedgehogs are undeniably cute little creatures, boasting prickly spines on their backs and soft, furry bellies that make them irresistibly huggable. When they feel threatened or scared, they curl up into a tight ball, showcasing their impressive armor. But when they're relaxed, their spines lay almost flat, revealing their friendly side! These delightful pets are perfect for beginners—easy to care for and simply a joy to have around.
Despite their spiky exterior, hedgehogs can be incredibly friendly. When they feel secure, their quills feel more like a gentle hairbrush than prickles! These curious little explorers love to roam and play, and critter balls are a fantastic way to keep them active and entertained.
Our baby hedgehogs start weaning from mom at around 5 weeks old and receive daily handling and socialization, so by the time they join your family at 6-8 weeks, they're ready to snuggle!
So, what exactly is a hedgehog? No, they’re not porcupines! While they may look similar, hedgehogs and porcupines aren't related at all. African pygmy hedgehogs are insectivorous mammals, not rodents, and their closest relatives are actually shrews. These pint-sized cuties typically weigh between 1/2 lb and 2 lbs and fit comfortably in an adult's cupped hand. With a thick coat of spines in various colors, they have soft white or dark fur covering their bellies, necks, faces, and legs.
While hedgehogs have relatively poor eyesight, their hearing, smell, and taste are highly developed. They are easygoing and non-aggressive, making them great companions for anyone. Well-adjusted hedgehogs easily warm up to new friends, and if you need to go on vacation for a week, they won’t sulk! When you return, they'll greet you as if you never left.

Lifespan: Get ready for a delightful companionship of 5 to 10 years! That’s plenty of time for snuggles and adventures together. And did you know? The longest-lived hedgehog on record made it to an impressive 13 years! With proper care, your little buddy could be part of your family for many wonderful years to come.
Diet: Our adorable hedgehog babies come home with a tasty supply of Fromm Gold Adult Cat Food! We love Fromm for its top-notch quality and complete nutrition—no need for any supplements here! We believe in letting our spiky friends munch to their hearts' content, so we provide 1/4 cup of food daily for some free-feeding fun. You can easily grab it right from our site or at pickup—easy peasy!
Hedgehogs are omnivorous insectivores, thriving on high-quality cat kibble. To spice things up, you can treat them to occasional delights like dead or live insects, and tiny bits of fruit. Just keep an eye on the fruit, as too much can upset their little tummies, and many hedgehogs can be picky about veggies.

Habitat: - A Cozy Home for Your Hedgehog! When it comes to creating the perfect home for your spiky friend, the options are endless! We recommend using guinea pig-style wire cages with plastic bottoms—super comfy and easy to clean! Our little ones are trained to use gravity-fed water bottles, and they’ll need a food dish to enjoy their meals. For bedding, we suggest recycled paper bedding like CareFresh or Clean & Cozy; it's safe and snuggly, without the risks of natural wood-based options.
Cohabitation: While hedgehogs are solitary animals and should be housed alone once they reach maturity, two female hedgehogs raised together often get along well!
Hideouts: Your hedgehog will love a cozy hideout, a flat-bottomed running wheel for exercise, and a few fun toys to keep them entertained. We offer complete hedgehog cage setups, available for pickup in-store or delivered right to your door with your new baby!
Bedding: Remember to change their bedding every 5-7 days, and when it’s time to clean the cage, skip the harsh chemicals! We recommend using paper bedding like Clean & Cozy, which tends to be the best choice for safety and comfort. For cleaning, we use Dawn dish soap—gentle yet effective! Hedgehogs also enjoy baths 1-2 times a month with warm water and baby shampoo, using a soft-bristled toothbrush for a little extra pampering. And don’t forget to check those toenails and trim as needed—cat nail trimmers work perfectly!
Exercise: Since hedgehogs are natural foragers, they love to explore! We recommend a 12-inch flat-bottomed running wheel to keep them fit and active. But exercise isn’t just about running—set up play areas with different hideouts and scatter food around for a fun foraging adventure.
